Floors
Floors account for approximately 10% of a buildings heat loss, so they need to be well insulated as well as water tight.
Ground floors are now typically made by pouring concrete on top of a waterproof membrane, whilst suspended floors are made of either concrete or wooden beams.
The main alternatives to a cement floor are:
Limecrete flooring.
This basically uses lime rather than cement and can also utilise non-quarried materials instead of sand and chippings.
Rammed earth flooring.
This involves using natural earth.
